Description

Church Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid-16th century, with an early 17th-century service range that is set forward to the right, and a mid to late 19th-century brick wing at the rear. The building was restored around 1968. It features a timber frame with plaster, and some exposed close studding at the first floor level at the rear, along with a red brick gable end to the right. The roof is covered with glazed black pantiles. The farmhouse has two storeys and attics, arranged in a three-cell form.

The windows are mullioned, with some original ones featuring roll-moulded mullions, while most are mid-20th-century copies. Additional original windows can be seen from the inside. There is a lobby entrance that includes a mid-20th-century gabled brick porch and a plank door. A notable feature is the good stack with four detached octagonal flues that have moulded brick bases and caps. The right-hand gable end displays 16th-century brickwork, although the upper part was rebuilt in the 18th century; it may have originally had a crowstepped design.

The service range has undergone significant alterations, including a 19th-century red brick casing and a shallow-pitch roof. Inside, the hall and parlour boast fine roll-moulded beam and joist ceilings, with run-out stops on the joists, and the moulding extends down the wall posts. Some close studding is visible at the service end, but in the main range, little of the frame is exposed. The ground floor fireplace at the service end features a fine three-way chimney crane. The 19th-century rear wing contains a good imported 16th-century stone fireplace with a four-centre arch and carved spandrels.
