Description

The Church of St John the Baptist is a parish church dating from the 14th century, with significant restorations in the late 18th and 19th centuries. It features random flint and rubble walls, complemented by stone quoins and stepped buttresses. The west tower has a battlemented parapet with flush work that includes initials, and the base of the tower also has flush work. This three-stage tower has louvred bell openings on all four sides. The nave and chancel are topped with slated roofs, with the chancel roof being lower and steeper. Most windows are from the 18th and 19th centuries in the Decorated style, except for one east window in the chancel that contains 15th-century glass depicting the armorial arms of Bishop Goldwell, Bishop of Norwich, Thomas de Brotherton, and Thomas Mowbray. The south porch features a 14th-century doorway with a two-centred pointed arch. The tower includes a doorway adorned with shields and fleurons in the arch order, along with a frieze of flush work above. Inside, there is an original piscina in the south wall of the chancel, and a brass on the nave floor commemorates Alexander Inglishhe, Rector in 1504. The font is also from the 14th century, octagonal in shape, with quatrefoils and blank arches.
