Description
The Campsea Ashe War Memorial is a war memorial unveiled in 1920, located in the churchyard of the Church of St John the Baptist in Campsea Ashe, Suffolk.
The monument is constructed from ashlar stone, featuring a polished marble base and steps. It is positioned at the north-eastern edge of the churchyard, near a major road junction, and is surrounded by Church Farmhouse, Smithy Cottage, and The Old Rectory, all of which are listed buildings.
The memorial consists of a tall, slender Latin cross with a hexagonal shaft and arms, resting on a tall hexagonal base. This base is set on a hexagonal step, which is placed on a large square plinth embedded in the ground. The front face of the cross displays a bronze Sword of Sacrifice.
The main inscription is in blackened letters and is found on the north-east, north, and north-west faces of the hexagonal step. It reads: (north-east) TO THE GLORY OF GOD (north) AND IN MEMORY OF THE (north-west) MEN OF CAMPSEA ASHE/ (north-east) WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES (north) FOR THEIR COUNTRY (north-west) 1914–1918.
Additionally, the front of the square plinth features the inscription PASS FRIEND – ALL IS WELL. The names of the fallen and their regiments are inscribed on all six faces of the plinth.
