Description
This barn, located about 80 metres north of Hoo Hall, dates from the early 19th century. It features a weatherboarded timber frame with a tall red brick and flint panelled plinth, topped by a clay pantile roof with gabled ends. The barn has a plan that includes nine roof bays and a midstrey on the north side of bays four and five. There is a large 20th-century lean-to shed on the north side.
On the exterior, the south side has double doors positioned to the left of centre, reaching about two-thirds of the way up. There are 20th-century inserted hatches on either side and a doorway at the right-hand end. Attached to the front of the left-hand end is a later 19th-century open-front cart-shed. The rear (north) side features a weatherboarded gabled midstrey to the right of centre and a large corrugated iron 20th-century lean-to shed to the left of the midstrey.
Inside, there are some earlier reused materials, including wall-posts, tie-beams, wall and sole-plates, and possibly some of the studding. The vertical studding is placed between the wall-posts with long straight braces and no mid-rail. The sole-plate sits on a tall brick and flint plinth. Curved knees and brackets support the tie-beams on either side of the threshing floor. The five tie-beams do not align with the roof bays. The roof structure consists of pegged soft-wood butt-purlins, with common rafters resting on the backs of the purlins and a ridge-board at the apex. The collars are mortice and tenoned to the principal rafters. The barn is depicted on the Hoo Hall estate map dated 1837.
