Description
Gibbs Cottage is a house dating from the 17th century. It is timber framed, covered in colourwashed render, and features a thatched roof. The structure consists of one and a half cells of a three-cell baffle-entry house that has been partially demolished. The cottage has two storeys with an attic.
The entrance front includes a 20th-century projecting wing on the left. To the right of this wing, there is close-studded walling with colourwashed infill. On the ground floor, there is a projecting oriel window with four lights, featuring ovolo-moulded mullions and a transom. To the left of this window is a three-light window with ovolo-moulded mullions. The first floor has render covering the close studding and a similar four-light window without a transom, with a three-light window to its left and a further two-light window on the far left with diamond-section mullions.
The right-hand gable end has 20th-century windows on the ground, first, and attic floors, all with four lights and ovolo-moulded mullions and a transom. At the rear, there is a renewed 20th-century window with ovolo-moulded mullions and a transom on the left side of the ground floor, and a renewed three-light window with moulded mullions on the right. The first floor features a four-light ovolo-moulded mullioned window on the left and a three-light window on the right with diamond-section mullions. The left-hand gable end has a lean-to outshut at ground floor level and two 20th-century cross windows on the first floor.
Inside, the walls display close studding, and there is an original sill beam. A central chamfered axial ceiling beam has stepped lamb's tongue end stops, and the joists are similarly end-stopped. There is a massive chimney bressumer and a winder staircase rising from the lobby. The first floor also features close studding and reverse-bracing.
