Description
The Old National School, dated 1837, is a former National School located in Beccles on the west side of Newgate. It is built from red and gault brick, with some stucco, and features a Welsh slate roof with a central brick ridge stack. The building is designed in a simplified Tudor style and consists of one and two storeys.
The front facing Newgate has three coped gables, with a two-storey former master's house in the center flanked by single-storey school rooms on either side. Square gault brick piers are positioned between the house and the school rooms, as well as at either end. The school rooms have red brick fronts with central doorways that include hoodmoulds; the left doorway features a keyblock, with a four-panel door on the left and a plank door on the right. Above the doorways in the gables are three-light windows, with the left window having mullions and a stepped hood, while the right window has a wooden casement with a flat hood.
The two-storey center section has a lined stucco front and features a three-light casement with a flat hood above two taller two-light casements and a plank door to the left, all of which have flat hoods. A datestone is located in the gable. The right side of the building, which faces Manor House Lane, has three casements, two of which open in the center, along with a nine-pane window. There is also a doorway with plank double doors located to the center left.
Overall, this building is a little-altered example of a former National School.
