Description
Forty Winks is a cottage that likely dates from the 17th century or early 18th century, with possible earlier origins and 19th-century alterations and extensions. It features a plastered timber frame, which is partly faced and extended in painted brick. The cottage has a thatched roof with gabled ends and a lateral stack at the rear of the main range, which has a brick shaft dating from around the 19th century.
The plan consists of a small single-storey and attic two-room layout, with a doorway located at the front left. The right-hand (east) end may either be an extension or has been faced in brick when the single-storey outshut was added at the back in the 19th century. It is unclear whether the lateral stack at the rear heats the outshut or the main range.
The exterior is one storey and attic with an asymmetrical two-window south front. It features 20th-century two and three-light casements, and the doorway to the left has a 20th-century door. The gable ends also have 20th-century two-light casements. At the back, there is a single-storey painted brick outshut with a pantile lean-to roof and 20th-century casements.
The interior has not been inspected, but the previous listing description from 1980 notes that there are stopped chamfered beams on the ground floor.
