Description
Northgate, located at 13 Market Hill, is a building dating from 1852 on the south side. It was formerly known as the Prince of Wales Inn and features a 16th-century, two-storey gabled cross wing on the left. The building has a timber-framed and plastered structure, with an overhanging first floor above No 13. The front of No 13A is made of painted brick, while the rear is plastered. There is a carriageway on the right side.
The building has a brick plinth and a single sash window with glazing bars and a flush frame for No 13. The first floor has casement windows, and the ground floor features two 2-light sash windows. No 13 includes a 18th-century door with two fielded lower panels and original glazing bars in the upper part. No 13A has a six-panel fielded door with an architrave, shaped brackets, and a flat hood with a panelled soffit. At the rear, a low range with a red brick wall forms part of the boundary of the churchyard.
All listed buildings in Market Hill form a group around The Shire Hall.
