Description
House, formerly part of a shop. The main range dates to 1541, as indicated by the inscription 'IOHAN ROZER A.D.1541' on a chimneybreast. There are 17th-century additions to the right and rear, connecting to The Forge. The house is timber framed with colourwashed brick cladding to the ground floor and exposed timbering above. The rear is red brick, and the roof is plaintiled at the front and pantiled at the rear. The original house had a jettied first floor, much of which has been infilled, but a section remains with one carved buttress shaft. The main range has four windows with various casements. A cross passage provides the entry, with a mid-20th century glazed door. An internal stack has two bricks inscribed 'IR' and a central one that has been defaced; two original mullion windows are at the rear. The right-hand extension has a single window range with casements, a 20th-century boarded door, and an internal stack. The right-hand gable end features a carved tie beam, possibly a reused element. One main ground floor room has roll-moulded beams and a door with linenfold carving. A beam above the fireplace is carved with three shields. An original painted panel above an internal doorway by the stack displays the words 'Yf god be wyth us Who ys a gaynst us', accompanied by two figures on either side. The roof is a good queen post roof. This is the oldest dated house in the county.
