Description

Top Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse with additions from the 19th century, located in Mettingham. The exterior is red brick, with cement render on the rear north side. A distinctive first-floor corbelled string course runs along the front, raised segmentally above the ground-floor openings, mirroring the design on the nearby Mettingham Hall. The roof is pantiled with glazed black tiles facing the front.

The farmhouse is two storeys high with attics, and has three windows featuring 18th-century mullion and transom casements. A central doorway is accessed via a re-used oak panelled door. Three dormers were added in the mid-20th century and gable stacks are present. The left gable end has been largely rebuilt, but retains two original first-floor window openings blocked with drip moulds matching the string course design. The right gable end is of 18th-century construction.

Inside, a first-floor stuccoed four-centred arched fireplace is surrounded by quoins and displays remnants of lozenge panels on either side of the arch, similar to a fireplace in Mettingham Hall; a corresponding fireplace below is missing its stucco render. The roof structure includes two rows of butt purlins and low collars, with solid bracing to the principal rafters, an uncommon feature. According to local tradition, the farmhouse originally stood within the same moated enclosure as Mettingham Hall.
