Description

The former Wangford Hundred workhouse, now a pig farm, was built between 1766 and 1767. It is constructed of red brick and features a first-floor brick band and a dentil eaves cornice, topped with a hipped plaintiled roof. The building is two storeys high with attics and has an H-shaped plan. The entrance front, which faces the road, is 75 meters long and includes 19 segmental-arched casement windows, predominantly with two lights, except for one bay that has three lights. The central main doorway features a six-panel door, with the upper four panels glazed, a tall rectangular fanlight, and a flat hood supported by shaped brackets. There are eight flat-roofed dormers on the roof, and above the entrance, there is the lower part of a square louvred bell turret. The wings of the building match the main style, connected by a nine-bay central block. While many windows have been replaced, the original square-leaded openings with wrought iron casements remain largely intact. The original floors are still present, although some internal partitions have been removed. This workhouse is likely the most intact large 18th-century workhouse still existing in the country, and complete building and equipping accounts are available in the Proceedings of the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology.
