Description
Spexhall House is a former parsonage house with a core dating from the 17th century, which was modernised in the early 19th century. The front of the house is dated 1822 and features the initials R.C. for Richard Crutwell, the then incumbent. The building is timber-framed and encased in early 19th-century red brick on the front and sides, with the front painted and the rear plastered. The roof has black glazed pantiles on the front slope and clay pantiles on the rear slope.
The house has an internal chimney-stack with a large plain red brick shaft and is two storeys high with attics. Most windows are early 18th-century, consisting of 3-light casements with transoms, square leaded panes, and pintle hinges, along with one cross window in the same style. These windows appear to have been reset in the brick front from an earlier phase of the house. The 1822 features include two canted bay windows on the ground floor—one on the front and the other on the south end—both with pointed Gothick tracery. There is also a single-light window in the same style beside the entrance door, which has a reeded architrave, entablature, and panelled linings, with a door that has six flush panels.
While no earlier features are visible inside, the overall form suggests a basic three-cell internal chimney house with a cross-entry, and the entrance door may still be in its original position. Additionally, there is a two-storey extension at the rear, built around 1870, which is made of red brick and has clay pantiles.
