Description
The Spexhall War Memorial is a Portland stone structure located in the churchyard, approximately 10 meters north of the Church of St Peter, which is listed at Grade II*. The memorial stands about 4.3 meters tall and features a Latin cross-head that rises from a simply moulded collar atop a slender, octagonal cross-shaft. The foot of the moulded cross-shaft rests on the sloped top of an octagonal pedestal. This pedestal has a two-stage base that sits on a circular, three-stepped base. Inscriptions are arranged around the pedestal.
The main dedicatory inscription, made of applied metal lettering, is located on the east face of the pedestal and reads "THE GLORIOUS DEAD ANNO DOMINI 1914–1919." The names of nine individuals who fell during the First World War, along with their rank and regiment, corps, or service, are listed in two groups on either side of this main inscription. On the west face, the dedication continues with "THIS CROSS WAS ERECTED BY THE PARISHIONERS OF SPEXHALL IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE OF THOSE WHO DIED TO SAVE THEIR COUNTRY."
The dates "1939 – 1945" are incised into the east face of the upper stage of the pedestal’s base, with the names and service of two individuals who died in the Second World War recorded on each face beside the dates.
