Description
Bleach Farmhouse is a farmhouse located on a large rectangular moated site, dating from the early to late 16th century. The building features a 2½-storey main range and a 2-storey rear wing, forming an L-shape. It is timber-framed, with the front finished in late 19th-century red brick and the sides and rear wing rendered. The main roof is covered with plaintiles, while the rear wing has pantiles. An internal chimney stack has a plain rectangular red brick shaft. The farmhouse includes various 20th-century casement windows, primarily 2-light, and a half-glazed door.
The rear wing, which is largely disused, is the oldest part of the structure, consisting of 4 bays with exposed framing inside. It features trusses with arched braces to the tie-beams and halved arched braces against the studs at the corners. There are also two blocked 4-light windows on the upper floor, retaining their diamond mullions. The roof has one row of unstepped butt purlins and one row of clasped windbraces, with principal rafters that are not related to the trusses below.
The main range has 5 bays and originally featured a basic internal chimney and cross-entry layout, which has now been altered to a lobby entrance. The cross entry was separated from the hall by an early 17th-century panelled screen, which still survives. The ceilings are plain and exposed, with beams and joists that have chamfers and curved stops; the upper ceilings are original. Above the 2-bay hall, there are two rooms with an original dividing partition. The roof in this section has 6 bays, with one row of unstepped butt purlins and cambered collars.
