Description
Red House is a former farmhouse that dates back to the early 18th century and was enlarged in the early 19th century. The building has two storeys and attics with an irregular shape. It is primarily constructed of red brick, although part of it likely has a timber-framed core, and it is covered with plain tiles. The house features several internal chimney stacks with plain red brick shafts. Most of the windows are early 19th-century, three-light casements with transoms and segmental arched heads, surrounded by frames, and square-leaded panes; some mid-20th-century replacements are in a matching style. The entrance door has six panels. A brick on the south (garden) front is dated 1808, which may indicate when the house was extended.
The older section of the building, which likely comprises the original house, forms an L-shaped section that is now the east wing and part of the south range. On the south side, there is a three-bay room aligned east-west, featuring ovolo-moulded main beams, which is linked by a chimney stack to the three-bay east wing that is aligned north-south. This wing is divided into a two-bay heated room and a single-bay unheated service room. The ceilings in this part of the house are plain and exposed, with chamfered main beams and substantial joists set on edge. The remainder of the house includes characteristic Regency fittings.
