Description

This is a house, originally divided into two dwellings, dating to the 15th and 16th centuries, with a front facade dating to the mid-19th century. It is two storeys high. The house has a timber frame. The sides and rear are rendered, while the front is faced in mid-19th century red brick with white brick quoins, window dressings, and a band below the upper windows; the roof is covered with clay pantiles. There are two chimney stacks, one internal and one at the end, both constructed from small red bricks with plain shafts. The ground floor has three sash windows with large wedge lintels, deep reveals, and a single vertical bar to each light. The upper floor has four two-light casement windows. There are two plain four-panelled doors, one with an open gabled timber porch. The house's frame is divided into four bays, and the current partition walls do not relate to the original structural divisions. At the west end, remnants of a fine two-bay hall remain, featuring a crown-post roof. The shaft and base of the crown post are chamfered, with run-off stops, and partly buried within later walls. The straight tie-beam to the truss has a moulded soffit, and the long arched braces are hollow-chamfered. One of the original doorways, with an arched head, is blocked up in the rear wall. A ceiling was inserted into the former hall area and is at a higher level than the rest of the house; additional tie-beams were added to support it where it meets the partition wall of the service area. The service bay has been completely remodelled, and a further early 16th century bay was added at the east end of the house, featuring plain, unchamfered, closely-spaced joists.
