Description

The Pines is a farmhouse, formerly known as Hill Farmhouse, dating from around 1600, with a significant extension added in 1908. The building is timber-framed and rendered, topped with a plaintiled roof. It stands two storeys high with attics. The original part of the house features a two-cell lobby-entrance layout and is positioned sideways. The internal chimney stack has diagonally-set attached shafts on a square base with a recessed panel.

On the north gable end, there are three original windows: a five-light mullioned window in the attic and a four-light mullion-and-transom window with a projecting sill on both the first and ground floors, all showcasing ovolo-mouldings. Inside, the house has a well-preserved interior with exposed framing and ceilings across five bays. The main ground-floor beams also feature ovolo-moulding, with unique stops shaped like little faces resembling Red Indians on the south side of the stack. The chimney stack originally had four hearths, one of which is now blocked; the northern hearth has a plain timber lintel, while the southern hearth features a flat brick arch and moulded jambs on both the ground and first floors.

An original newel stair located by the stack leads up to the attic, which retains its original ceilings. In the south room, the ceilings have curved stops with jewel and trench designs. The roof structure includes one row of unstepped butt-purlins and one row of clasped purlins, along with cambered collars and windbraces. The house also contains several original moulded plank doors. A blocked doorway in the side wall of the north room suggests that the current range was added to an earlier structure.
