Description

Spexhall Manor is a former farmhouse located on a partly moated site, dating from the 16th century, with extensive additions and restoration carried out in 1908 by Sarel. The building has two storeys and attics, following a basic three-cell lobby-entrance plan. Originally timber-framed, the manor was faced in brick before 1908, but now features exposed studding and brick nogging on the upper floor. The studding appears to be genuine, although pairs of short arched braces have been added and are evenly spaced across the facade. The roofs are covered with plaintiles.

Inside, there is a 16th-century chimney stack with four barrel shafts and moulded bases, along with various later chimney stacks, two of which are set externally and have shafts in a similar style. The manor has three gabled dormers that feature mock-timbering and three-light casement windows with diamond-leaded panes. The remaining windows have square-leaded panes, with two-light casements on the upper floor and four-light casements on the ground floor.

A two-storey porch built in 1908 jetties on three sides and features mock timbering on the upper storey, along with a heavily panelled door. The south end of the front and the entire garden front were also constructed in 1908, using red brick with some mock timbering and plaintiled roofs, designed in a lavish pseudo-Tudor style. This includes two projecting gables, one of which is jettied, both with mullion-and-transom windows on the ground floor. A tall narrow timbered wing contains the side entrance door. The interior of the original house showcases exposed timbering, including one ceiling with moulded cross beams, while the extensions are primarily in the Edwardian Queen Anne style.
