Description
Mahn House is a former farmhouse dating from the late 16th century. It has two storeys and attics, featuring a three-cell lobby-entrance plan. The building is timber-framed and encased in Edwardian red brick, topped with black glazed pantiles. It has two internal chimney stacks with rebuilt shafts, panelled and corbelled heads with dentils. The windows are 20th-century small-paned casements with two lights. An enclosed gabled porch displays the date 1905 and the initials W.N., which stand for William Neave, the owner at that time.
Inside, all timbers are exposed, with a frame consisting of five bays, including a chimney bay. There is an original newel stair next to the chimney stack leading to the first floor, as well as a later flight of stairs to the attic. The ground floor ceilings feature plain joists set flat and chamfered main beams, while the upper ceilings were added later. On the upper floor, remnants of several original diamond-mullioned windows can still be seen. The roof includes clasped side purlins, cambered collars, and cranked windbraces.
Additionally, a 1½-storey lean-to, rendered and with a slate roof, was added to the north side in the early 19th century. The house is positioned sideways to the road and was previously known as Dawson's Farmhouse.
