Description

The Halesworth War Memorial Obelisk is an approximately 4.5-meter tall memorial made of Aberdeen granite. It is located in a prominent position within a small memorial garden called The Arboretum, next to the north-eastern entrance of the churchyard of the Church of St Mary the Virgin, which is listed as Grade II*. The memorial is also near several other listed buildings in the town center, including 1 Market Place, which is Grade II.

The memorial features an obelisk that rises from a slightly tapering pedestal. The pedestal has a two-stage base, with the lower stage made of a different stone and standing on a three-stepped base that is square in shape. The main dedicatory inscription, made of applied metal lettering, is located on the north-east face of the pedestal and reads: "IN HONOUR OF THE MEN/ OF HALESWORTH/ WHO FELL IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ 1914–1918." Each of the other three faces of the pedestal is inscribed with "IN MEMORIAM" followed by names.

Additionally, there is an inscription on the front face of the upper base stage of the pedestal that states: “GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS”/ 1939 – 1945. The names of those who died in the Second World War are inscribed on two other faces, with the fourth face stating: “LEST WE FORGET”/ CIVILIANS KILLED BY ENEMY ACTION/ followed by three names.
