Description

Ivy Cottage is a pair of cottages located in Homersfield, dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century, with parts of an older structure incorporated. The cottages are 1½ storeys high and are timber-framed, featuring old render with remnants of lined panels and thatched roofs. An internal chimney stack divides the two cottages, with two diagonally-set square shafts connected by broaches to a rectangular base.

The front has four windows, which are old 3-light casement windows with pintle hinges; the ground floor windows include transoms. There are two slightly recessed plank doors with plain surrounds. A later chimney stack is located at the right end, integrated within the frame.

No. 82 consists of two bays and has an exposed ceiling on the ground floor, with unchamfered joists set flat and a deep, narrow main beam. The front wall plate shows mortices for earlier studding, indicating a fragment of an earlier building. Inside No. 83, only the main beams are visible on the ground floor, as an original partition wall has been moved.

On the upper floors of both cottages, there is widely spaced studding, cambered tie beams, and some reused timbers. The lightweight roof features two rows of butt purlins, and in the end bay, straight braces are positioned behind the purlins, bisecting the common rafters.
