Description

Rose Cottages is a pair of cottages located on Shustoke Church Road, dating from the late 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th and late 20th centuries. The cottages are timber-framed with brick infill, and the 19th-century parts are made of sandstone, with the front rendered. They feature plain-tiled gable roofs and are part of a row of cottages. The end stacks have been moved inside due to the 19th-century extensions. Originally, each cottage had a layout of one room on the ground floor and one on the first floor, and they are now one storey with an attic. There are three gable dormers from the 19th and 20th centuries, and No. 3 has a late 20th-century bow window. No. 2 has a segmental arch with a 3-light casement window and adjacent doorways, each with narrow hoods supported by shaped brackets. The door of No. 2 is a 19th-century design with four sunk panels, and it has a 19th-century kitchen extension at the back made of sandstone rubble.

Inside No. 2, there are stop-chamfered main beams and joists, and the rear wall is framed. The tie beams are exposed on the first floor, and the front wall framing was likely removed when the kitchen addition was made. There are also small hearths that are probably from the 19th century. The layout of the cottages may indicate a subdivision of a single dwelling in the 19th century, as the timber scantlings and mouldings are characteristic of the 17th century.
