Description
The moat, bridges, and gatepiers at Shustoke Hall Farmhouse date from around 1686 and are classified as a homestead moat. The structure features sandstone rubble revetments, with the upper courses and parapet made of red brick in random bond, topped with sandstone coping. The moat has a rectangular plan, with the west arm dammed to serve as the main entrance to the forecourt of the house. On the west side, there are gatepiers made of red brick, which include stone cornices and ball finials, as well as brick pilasters and scroll capitals that have rebates for the gates. The south arm of the moat is spanned by a footbridge constructed of red brick, which has piers for a gate or doorway in the center and steps leading down to the water.
