Description

St Mary’s Cottage is a house dating from the late 16th century. It is located on The Green in Homersfield. The building is timber-framed and now rendered, with a thatched roof. It has two internal chimney stacks topped with small shafts of red brick. The upper storey features two eyebrow dormers, each with a two-light casement window containing small panes of glass. The ground floor has two three-light casement windows from the 19th century, with a single bar to each light. Two slightly recessed plank doors provide access. The interior has been altered and may not be entirely original. Two ground floor ceilings retain heavy, unchamfered flat joists. One chimney stack, inserted later, partially blocks a stair trap. The building exhibits a change of levels between its ends, and one tie-beam has been cut through. A side purlin roof covers part of the structure; the remainder of the roof was likely renewed at a later date. The cottage is positioned sideways to the street.
