Description
The Old House is a former school house that has been converted into a private dwelling. It is dated 1736 on a tablet above the door and has undergone significant alterations and additions in the early 20th century. The building is constructed of red brick and features a plain tile roof. It has two storeys and an attic, with the original house consisting of a five-window range, featuring sashes with glazing bars set in flush frames and flat brick arches.
The central doorway is framed by an original stone panelled architrave and cornice, which is supported by console brackets. The door itself is a 19th-century half-glazed design. Above the doorway is an inscribed stone tablet, supported laterally by consoles and topped with a broken pediment on console brackets, which contains a cartouche. To the right of the entrance is another inscribed stone tablet dated 1829. Inside, there is a coved plaster cornice and a later mansard roof that includes three flat-roofed dormers.
To the left of the main building is an addition featuring a curved Dutch-style gable, which is also two storeys and an attic with a single window range that has sashes with small panes. Between this addition and the original house is a flat-roofed section with semi-circular headed windows on both the ground and first floors, as well as a circular window above. The interior boasts fine 18th-century mantelpieces, which appear to be later imports. A boundary wall to the south of the house is topped with carved stone consoles. The tablet above the door reads: "Sr. Edward Duke Late of this Parish Baronet. having by his Will Bequeathed A Thousand Pounds for the Building of A School & Maintenance, for A Master for ye Time being, to Instruct the Poore Children belonging to this Parish to Read & Write, in Persuance there to, this House was Erected by Edmund Tyrell Esq. (only Executor of the Said Sir Edmund Duke) in ye Year of Our Lord 1736."
