Description

Hill Cottage, also known as No 9, and the adjoining Rose Cottage are a pair of cottages that date from the 16th or 17th century, with later alterations and additions. They are constructed with a timber frame that is either plastered or rough rendered, and the right side features red brick. The cottages have a red plain tiled roof, with red brick chimney stacks on the right ridge and left rear. The rear wing is also plastered.

The buildings are two storeys tall, with a single storey extension on the left. The front has a window arrangement of 1:2, featuring various casement windows with glazing bars, with the right cottage's windows dating from the 19th century. There are central paired doors with simple surrounds.

Inside the right cottage, the ground floor boasts a moulded plaster ceiling from around 1600, which consists of four panels separated by a chamfered bridging joist that is supported by a carved and moulded jowled storey post. Each panel is adorned with a margin of fruit and foliage, a central shield of arms, and symmetrically placed fleur de Lis, roses, and flowers. The frame remains intact throughout, featuring stop-chamfered bridging joists, flat section ceiling beams, and jowled storey posts. The two-bay rear wing has a similar frame. The first floor includes two 19th-century cast iron fire surrounds, and there are vertically boarded doors with original ironmongery.
