Description
Bentley War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, with additions for the Second World War. It is situated on a grassed area at the junction of Church Road and Station Road.
The memorial is made of limestone and features a tall Latin cross with a hexagonal shaft that ends in a splayed foot. The shaft rises from a hexagonal pedestal, which is placed on a hexagonal plinth. The plinth has a tiered top and a moulded cap, and the entire structure rests on a two-stepped hexagonal base.
The plinth displays inscriptions and names in incised lettering, painted black. The main inscription, located on the south-west face, reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN THANKFUL/ REMEMBRANCE OF THE/ MEN OF BENTLEY/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR US IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ 1914–1918." The adjoining west and south faces list the names of 16 men who died in the First World War, with eight names on each face.
The dedication for the Second World War is found on the north-east face and reads "1939–1945" followed by seven names.
The memorial is set within a circular area of cobbles that is bordered by stone kerbs.
