Description
Swan House is a terrace of eight cottages located on Mistley High Street, built in the 18th century for Richard Rigby, with later alterations and additions. The cottages are faced with painted and red brick, while Nos. 6 and 8, along with the return of Swan House, are plastered. They feature a red tiled roof with a change in pitch between Nos. 5 and 6 and have four ridge and one rear red brick chimney stacks. The buildings are two storeys high with attics and include ten flat-headed dormers. There is a central band running across Nos. 1 to 5, and the terrace has an eleven-window range, primarily consisting of small-paned vertically sliding sashes, although some windows have glazing bars. Notable features include a 19th-century two-storey bay on No. 1, a tripartite ground floor window on No. 2, a small-paned shop window with end pilasters, fascia, and canopy on No. 5, and a ground floor bay on No. 8. The doorways are paired and adorned with pilasters, friezes, and flat canopies, except for Nos. 8 and 9, which have their doorways set to the left and right respectively, featuring segmental heads. Some original six-panelled doors are still present. This terrace is part of the village developed by Richard Rigby in the late 18th century.
