Calburne Shop Occupied By J And Rw Steel

Calburne is a house and shop located on Mistley High Street, dating from the 18th century and built for Richard Rigby. The building is likely made of plastered brick and features a red plain tiled roof with a rear red brick chimney stack. It stands two storeys high with attics, and has two flat-headed dormers that contain two-light casements. The façade includes end pilasters and a five-window range of small-paned vertically sliding sashes with moulded surrounds, although the central window is blocked.

To the left, the house has plinths and two ground floor vertically sliding sash windows with horns. There is a six-panelled door to the left, which has reveal panels and is flanked by moulded pilasters with capitals and bases, a frieze, and a moulded flat canopy. The shop to the right features a shop window on the left and a pair of similar windows on the right, with a shop door situated between them. Each window has central glazing bars and moulded panels both below and above, along with moulded side pilasters that have capitals and bases enclosing the panels. There is a similar panel above the door, and fascias over the windows, although the fascia above the right windows has been covered by a 20th-century fascia. A continuous canopy extends over all the windows.
