Description

The Walnuts and The Thatched House are two houses located on Felsham Road in Cockfield. The first house dates from the 17th century and features a rendered timber frame, with some remaining pargetting, and a gabled thatched roof. It has a left end stack made of early 19th-century brick and a rear lateral stack also finished in early 19th-century brick. The second house, known as The Walnuts, was built in the mid-19th century and is constructed of flint with yellow brick quoins and dressings, topped with a hipped slate roof and brick stacks.

The 17th-century house has a three-unit plan and is one storey with an attic, featuring a two-window range. It includes two late 19th-century panelled doors, late 19th-century six-pane sash windows set in moulded wood architraves, and a three-light casement window in a swept dormer. The mid-19th-century house is two storeys tall with a three-window range, featuring a four-panelled door with a fanlight set in a semicircular arched brick architrave, tripartite and four-pane sash windows in segmental-arched brick architraves, and a dentilled cornice above three three-light casements on the first floor.

Inside the 17th-century house, there are stop-chamfered and boxed beams, as well as a collar-truss roof with clasped purlins. The mid-19th-century house has a central staircase with a stick baluster leading to the landing.
