Description
Chestnut House, formerly listed as The Chestnuts, is an 18th-century timber-framed and plastered house located on Hall Street in Long Melford. It is built on an L-shaped plan and was refaced in the late 18th century or early 19th century with grey gault brick. The building features a plain parapet and a modillion cornice that extends some distance on both the north and south ends. It has two storeys and a five-window range, with double-hung sash windows that have glazing bars set in plain reveals. The central section, which consists of three windows, projects slightly forward. The entrance includes a six-panel door, with the upper four panels glazed, and is framed by a doorcase with panelled reveals, a semi-circular ornamental fanlight (which is blocked), plain Tuscan columns, and an open pediment. The roof is tiled and hipped behind the parapet.
