Description
Beaufort Cottage and the former Barclays Bank is a building that combines a cottage with bank premises, located on the west side of The Street in East Bergholt. It was built in the early 19th century, with a likely 17th-century rear wing. The structure features a timber-framed rear range that is rendered and partially cased or underbuilt in whitewashed brick, while the front range is made of whitewashed brick with a slate roof. The building is two storeys high and has three bays, with a two-storey rear wing gable end facing the street.
The front range, known as Beaufort Cottage, has a central six-panel door set in a doorcase that includes fluted pilasters, a frieze with roundels above the pilasters, and a cornice. The door has panelled reveals and is flanked by canted bays that contain sash windows with glazing bars and cornices. The unequal sashes have glazing bars and sills above. The roof is hipped with end stacks.
The rear range, which housed the former Barclays Bank, features a 20th-century door to the left of the gable end and 20th-century casement windows. It has a steeply-pitched roof.
The interior of the building has not been inspected.
