Description

Fountain House is a house and cottage that has been converted into a restaurant. It consists of three sections: the central part dates back to the 16th century, with a probable 17th-century section to the left and an 18th-century cottage to the right. The building is timber-framed and rendered, featuring a plain tile roof and a red brick chimney. It has two storeys and an attic, with the single-storey cottage projecting from the right gable end facing the street.

The left section has three-light windows with central casements, while the jettied central range has a 2½-bay frame. There is a porch to the left with an elliptical arch and a six-panel door, and to the right, there is a three-light window with a central casement and a 16-pane sash. An added porch is also present on the right. The first floor features three casement windows, a gabled dormer, and an off-centre ridge stack to the right, with the roof gableted to the right. The cottage has a 19th-century door and window with glazing bars on the gable end.

Inside, the jettied range displays jowled posts, chamfered tie beams with arch braces, wall plates, and studding. The central half-bay contains a large stepped stack. The ground floor features a chamfered spine beam and exposed joists, along with chamfered beams that have run-out stops. The rebuilt inglenook retains a Tudor-arched bressummer at the rear. The cottage was once the home of John Dunthorne, a village plumber and an artist who was a companion of John Constable.
