Description

The Walnuts is a house with a core dating from the 13th or 14th century, featuring alterations and additions from the 15th and 16th centuries. It is timber-framed and plastered, topped with red pantiled roofs. The building has external chimneystacks on both the right and left ranges, with the right stack extending through the ridge of the left range. It has one storey and attics, with the left range being two storeys. The right range has a hipped roof with a gablet. The windows are 20th-century casements arranged in a 2:1 pattern. A 20th-century porch and door are located on the left range, while the right range features 20th-century French windows. There are also 20th-century rear extensions.

The original left range from the 13th or 14th century has a crosswing to the right that appears to be from the 15th or 16th century. The left range displays heavy, widely spaced wall studs and a large halved arch brace visible on the front wall. Below the top plate, there is a blocked original window with closely set diamond mullions. Although worn, the splayed top plate scarfs have undersquinted abutments. The roof is boarded below the collars, and while the apex was not visible during the last survey, some original rafters seem to remain intact. The ground floor has an inserted ceiling and a back-to-back inglenook fireplace serving both the left and right ranges, with the right fireplace being blocked and featuring a segmental arch leading to a bake-oven. The right range has jowled storey posts, with the top plate only visible at the time of the survey.
