Description

The Vale Farmhouse is a house with a core dating from the 14th to 15th century, featuring alterations and additions from the 16th century and later. It is constructed with timber framing and plaster, topped with red plain tiled roofs. The building has two storeys and includes an off-centre right and external left red brick chimneystack. To the forward right, there is a single-storey range from the 19th century made of red brick with a red pantile roof. The rear left features a lower, one-storey and attic range from the 16th century, which has been significantly altered and extended in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The main range has three small paned vertically sliding sash windows on the first floor and three small paned French windows on the ground floor, along with a 20th-century door leading to the rear range. Inside, the late 16th-century wing originally featured arch braces to tie beams, but the roof has been reconstructed in the 18th century and later. The left bays of the main range display heavy close-set wall studs and flat section ceiling beams, with carpenter's marks visible on the ceiling and jowled storey posts. The right bay, which seems to have been extended at one time, is of earlier origin and retains an arched braced tie beam, although one brace has been cut away; this supports the stem of a chamfered, square section crown post. Later decorations obscure parts of the frame. Additionally, there is a back-to-back inglenook fireplace with mantel beams above, and two 18th-century corner cupboards by the chimney.
