Description
Marsh Gate in Seaton consists of two cottages, with the one on the left dating from the 18th century and the one on the right from the 16th or 17th century, or possibly earlier. Both cottages are timber-framed and plastered, featuring vari-coloured tiled roofs, with the roof of the left cottage being lower. Each cottage has a central chimneystack and is two storeys high. The front has a three-window range of three-light casements, and there is a door to the left that has a moulded surround and pediment. On the left side, a 16th-century six-light window with ovolo moulded mullions and a central transom was discovered during recent repairs to the plaster, although there is no internal evidence to suggest that the frame is anything other than 18th century. The right cottage has an inserted ceiling, heavy wall studs, and an inglenook fireplace, but there was no access to this range at the time of the resurvey.
