Description
The Harkstead War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was erected in 1920 by EE Saunders of Ipswich, with additions for the Second World War. It is made of Portland stone and is located prominently on the south side of the churchyard of the Church of St Mary, which is listed as Grade II*. The memorial is situated on the west side of the footpath leading to the south porch.
The structure takes the form of a Latin cross, featuring a relief carving of a laurel wreath atop a tall shaft that tapers in an octagonal section from a battered octagonal plinth. The entire memorial stands on a three-stepped base.
On the south face of the plinth and the top step of the base, there is an incised dedicatory inscription that reads: "TO THE / GLORY OF GOD / AND IN / LOVING MEMORY / OF THE / BRAVE MEN / OF THIS PARISH / WHO GAVE THEIR / LIVES FOR THEIR / COUNTRY / IN THE / GREAT WAR / 1914-1918 / THEIR NAME LIVETH / FOR EVERMORE." The names of 12 local servicemen who died in the war are inscribed on the east and west faces of the plinth. Additionally, a further inscription on the north face of the plinth states: "ALSO THOSE / WHO FELL IN THE / SECOND / WORLD WAR [Names]."
