Description

St. Mary's garden wall, gate, and gate piers in Costessey date from the 17th century but have a late 19th-century facade. The structure is built from brick and flint and features a pantiled roof. It has an off-centre through passage plan with gable end stacks. The gable end is made of brick and flint, with blocked windows at the first floor and an elaborate moulded brick gable that over-sails. The rear wall is also brick and flint, showcasing an ogee-moulded door frame and one original 3-light plain-chamfered mullioned window. A late 19th-century timber cantilevered garderobe is present. The main facade, from the late 19th century, consists of three bays and two storeys with half attics. It features a moulded gault brick cornice, voussoirs, sills, and a ground floor window with mullions and transoms. A 17th-century door with an ogee-moulded frame remains in its original position. The steep-pitched roof is original but was re-fashioned when the walls were heightened, and there are late 19th-century Tudor-style chimneys. There are also 19th and 20th-century extensions to the side. Inside, there is a full set of transverse principal beams with connecting spine beams and stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops at the first floor. The 19th-century garden wall features quarter round coping and moulded brick ball finials flanking the garden gate.
