Description

This is a 17th-century house, originally a single dwelling, now divided into two separate properties (numbers 138 and 140) and one remaining separate property (number 142) on The Street in Costessey. The construction is a mix of colourwashed brick, flint, and rendering, with pantiled and plaintiled roofing. The house originally followed an L-plan Lobby Entrance design. A central axial stack is located in the main wing, while a gable-end stack and a later intermediate axial stack are in the subsidiary wing. The house has two storeys with attics and steeply pitched roofs. 19th-century casement windows are set in the original openings of the main wing and the lower end of the subsidiary wing; more modern windows are found in the rest of the subsidiary wing. A modern full-length lean-to has been added to the main wing, and various lean-to additions are present at the rear of the building. An original fireplace is retained within the main wing.
