Description
Costessey War Memorial is located in the churchyard of St Edmund’s Church on The Street in Costessey, positioned by the south wall of the church near the south porch. The memorial features a stone floriated Latin cross atop an octagonal shaft. The cross head is adorned with carved fleuron and ballflower decoration at the top and on the two ends of the crossbar. The shaft displays two bands of incised foliate carvings around the top, with incised mock-trefoil arch motifs in between. These trefoil motifs are also repeated around the bottom of the shaft. The shaft rests on a moulded two-tiered octagonal plinth that bears inscriptions and stands on a three-stepped octagonal base.
The incised inscription reads: TO/ THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN/ UNDYING MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF THIS/ PARISH WHO FELL/ IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ (NAMES)/ LIVE/ WORTHY OF/ THEIR EXAMPLE// AND THESE/ MADE THE/ SUPREME/ SACRIFICE/ 1939 – 1945/ (NAMES).
