Description
Whiterails Farmhouse is an L-plan house with a subsidiary wing dating from the 16th century and a main wing from the 17th century. The building is constructed of brick and features pantiled roofs, with later alterations made over time. The subsidiary wing was originally a timber-framed open hall, retaining three trusses, with the central truss closed. It has arched braces and a cambered tie beam that allowed for wall-posts. Around 1600, a floor was added alongside a brick gable end with a stack and octagonal chimneys. An axial stack was introduced later in the 17th century, and the timber frame was replaced with brickwork in the 18th century.
The main wing has two storeys and an attic, with a facade consisting of three bays. It features an off-centre 19th-century door case and 19th-century three-light mullioned and transomed windows that were inserted into much-reduced original openings. A moulded brick string course runs along the facade, and there are remnants of moulded brick double pediments above the ground floor windows. The south gable end has a crow-stepped design with a moulded brick string course and double pediments over blocked windows. At the rear, there are three large contemporary stacks with 19th-century chimneys and modern openings. The north gable end is dated 1896 and bears the initials E.H.E.L. (E. H. Evans Lombe).
Inside, the farmhouse features a 17th-century vice with a facetted newel and numerous original door frames, one of which has barred and ogee stops. There is an original latch on the first floor with a heart-shaped loop-drop handle. The beams display protruding angle rolls flanked by cavettos, and the original roof includes two sets of butt-purlins, collars, and wind bracing.
