Description

This is a U-shaped range of barn, single-storeyed connecting structures, stable block, and byre located to the north of Costessey Park House, attributed to Sir John Soane and dating from 1784. The walls are constructed of red brick and topped with slate roofs. The barn is set at right angles to the stable block and byre, which are connected by single-storeyed structures that have a curvilinear plan. The stable block is two storeys high, featuring a central pediment and a hipped roof. It has six semi-circular headed windows at the rear, each with moulded brick hood moulds, and two lunettes in the upper storey. Most of the front windows are from the 20th century. The pediment includes a circular clock recess, a simple dentilled cornice, a louvred vent on the roof ridge, and some original stable furniture. The barn has an outshut with a catslide roof, lunettes in the gables, and semi-circular headed windows with hood-moulds on the outshut. It also features a strutted king post roof. The byre is single-storeyed with one side open.
