Description
The Swan Hotel is a significant building located in Harleston, dating from the 17th century with an impressive 18th-century red brick front. The hotel features a stuccoed ground floor, a parapet, and a moulded brick string course at the second floor level. It is a large structure with three storeys and nine windows across. The windows are sashes with glazing bars set in moulded casings, topped with flat brick arches. The central second floor window is blind, while the central first floor window opens onto a fine wrought iron balcony that provides a hood over the central carriageway, which has a segmental arch and double doors.
The rear of the building is plastered, with the first and second floors separated by slender wooden Tuscan pilasters, and there is a Venetian window above the carriageway. The roof is hipped and covered with tiles. At the rear, there are two long 17th-century two-storey wings that form two sides of a courtyard. These wings are timber-framed and plastered, featuring steeply pitched black glazed pantile roofs with gable ends. The south wing retains its original first-floor windows, while the other wing has later casements and sashes with glazing bars. Above the balcony at the front, there is a large ornate wrought iron bracket that supports the inn sign.
