Description
14 The Thoroughfare is a 18th century building located in Harleston, which includes Nos 2 and 4 Union Street. It features a red brick front that conceals an earlier timber-framed structure. The building has a steeply pitched black glazed pantile roof with gable ends, and the left-hand end facing Union Street has a Dutch gable.
The front elevation is two storeys high and has three wood mullion and transom casements on the first floor, with the centre window blocked. The ground floor has a large early 20th century shop window with pilasters and a dentilled cornice, and a corner entrance that continues around to the left-hand return. Above this entrance are two first-floor wood mullion and transom casements with segmental heads and keystones, along with a similar blind window above in the gable.
At the rear, facing Union Street, Nos 2 and 4 Union Street also have a red brick front that conceals an earlier timber-framed structure. This section has a steeply pitched black glazed pantile roof with gabled ends, two storeys and an attic, with attic windows in the gable end. The first floor features two wood mullion and transom casements and a large sash window with glazing bars. The ground floor has two doorways with reeded architraves—one is a modern glazed door and the other is panelled and glazed—along with a large fixed-light window between them, all topped with flat rubbed brick arches. To the left, there is a small early 19th century splayed shop window with glazing bars and a moulded cornice.
