Description

Mere Cottage is a house dating back to the 17th century, with later alterations. It is constructed of rendered timber frame and brick, with a front roof covered in glazed black pantiles and a rear roof in pantiles. The house originally comprised three rooms, with a 17th-century gabled wing at the rear and a 20th-century stair outshut added. The front facade is brick, featuring a brick plinth to the left of the front door. It has three bays and two storeys. The windows are 16-pane sashes, and above the central door is a sash window under a segmental arch. Rusticated brick pilasters run from the plinth to the eaves on either side of the door, with rusticated quoins. There is a platband on the left side of the door; the rustication on the windows to the left of the door appears to have been partially removed. A central axial stack of five clustered shafts rises from the roof. The left-hand gable wall is constructed in English bond. Rusticated window surrounds are present on the ground, first, and attic floors, with platbands separating the floors. A four-light mullion and transom window with ovolo mouldings is on the ground floor, while the first and attic floors have 20th-century windows. The right-hand gable wall is timber-framed and has an entrance door comprising six panels, topped with a flat hood on consoles. Inside, the transverse beams feature jewel stops and bar stops. There is arch-bracing in the exposed framing. The roof exhibits arched wind braces and butt-purlins.
