Description

The Loddon Branch Library, part of Norfolk County Council, is a former school and school house built in 1857 by J.S. Benest and A. Newson, with an addition made in 1881. The building is constructed of knapped flint with yellow stone dressings and features a slate roof with gabled ends.

On the left side, the former school house includes a small truncated corner tower with a pointed arch porch underneath. To the right, there is a projecting two-storey gabled wing that has three-light Gothic windows with cusped headed lights, along with a lean-to porch on the right side. Attached to the right is the main single-storey hall, which has three high gables adorned with large Gothic windows made up of three lancets and quatrefoil lights. Between the gables, there are five cinquefoil lights. The left gable has suffered significant damage from wind in 1976. There is also a small gabled porch on the far right side. All windows feature hexagonal panes.

In front of the building, there is a low flint wall with yellow brick bands and coping, along with piers at intervals that support cast iron railings featuring ornate stanchions with brackets and finials. The library is included for its group value.
