LODDON CHURCH PLAIN (north side) No. 31 (Loddon branch library, Norfolk County Council)

Former school and school house, now public library. 1857 by J.S. Benest and A. Newson and added to in 1881. Knapped flint with yellow stone dressings. Slate roof with gabled ends. On left (west) the former school house has small truncated corner tower with pointed arch porch beneath. Projecting two storeyed gabled wing to right with three-light Gothic windows with cusped headed lights, and lean-to porch to right hand side. Attached to right (east) the main single storey hall with three high gables with large Gothic windows formed from three lancets and quatrefoil lights. Between gables there are five cinquefoil lights. The left hand gable has been recently (1976) badly damaged by wind. Small gabled porch to far right (east). All windows have hexagonal panes. Including area wall in front (south), low wall of flint with yellow brick bands and coping, piers at intervals with cast iron railings between with ornate stanchions with brackets and finials. Included for group value.
