Description
The Church of St Mary is a parish church that features elements from the medieval period and the Victorian era. It is constructed from flint with stone dressings, while the chancel is faced with colour-washed brick. The roofs are made of slate and plain tiles. The church includes a 15th-century west tower, a 12th-century south wall of the nave, and a 19th-century north aisle and south porch, along with a re-faced chancel.
Notable architectural features include a Norman south door with one order of nook-shafts, chevron-moulded jambs, and a medallion-moulded arch. There is also a 14th-century Y-traceried and cusped 2-light south window. The unbuttressed west tower has a 2-light Y-traceried west window, 2-light ogee-traceried bell-openings, and a crenellated parapet. The chancel tracery is of Victorian design.
Inside, the church features a 14th-century 2-bay north arcade with an octagonal central pier and 2-centred arches of 2 plain-chamfered orders. The chancel arch dates from the 14th century and has facetted responds. There is a tall 15th-century tower arch and an octagonal font made of Purbeck stone, which has shallow, 2-centred blind arches and dates to around 1200. The roofs throughout the church are of Victorian style.
