Description
No. 20 Princes Street is a Grade II* listed building that was originally used for an unknown purpose and is now a restaurant. The structure features 15th and 16th century undercrofts. The restaurant section, dating from the 16th century, is built of flint rubble with a timber-framed first floor and has a pantile roof. It stands two storeys tall with a jetty at the first floor and three windows on that level. There is a left-side entrance leading to Plumbers Arms Alley, and the front has been altered in the 20th century for restaurant use, including a side entrance. The first floor has sash windows with glazing and moulded timber surrounds, along with a small central dormer with a sloping roof. The ceiling on the first floor is battened.
The rear range is also two storeys high with a first-floor jetty and five first-floor windows. The right-hand door features simple pilasters and a hood, while the left-hand door is a 20th-century 'Tudor' style with flanking four-light windows that have diamond pattern metal glazing bars. There is a large central mullion and transom window, with herring-bone brickwork between the first-floor studs. The right side is rendered, and there are two four-light windows to the left with diamond pattern metal glazing bars, as well as two 20th-century mullion and transom windows to the right with coving beneath the cill.
The undercrofts are made of brick. Beneath the rear range, there are two bays featuring double order diagonal and cross ribs with a low profile. Underneath the street range, remnants of an early 16th-century barrel vault run parallel to the street line, with two moulded brick arches on the east wall and twin lighting niches in the south and east walls. The building is graded II* for its undercrofts, which are part of an important group within the City Walls.
