Description
No. 7 London Street is a former office building, now part of a department store, constructed in 1896 by G. Skipper. It is made of brick and terracotta and stands three storeys tall with two bays. The building features an extravagant use of architectural and figurative detail. The 20th-century shopfront extends from Nos. 1 to 5 and includes shallow-canted first-floor oriel windows supported by arches, with two tiers of arcaded windows topped by a frieze. The second floor has round-arched windows alongside flanking basket-arched windows. Central and end polygonal pilasters support moulded segmental arches at the second floor. There are two dormer gables with oculi above a cornice band, as well as small end and central turrets. Inside, there is a fine plaster-work ceiling on the first floor.
