Description

This group of shops, numbers 6, 7, 8A, and 9 Guildhall Hill, dates from the early 18th century. They are constructed of red brick, which has been painted on numbers 6 to 8A. The roof is tiled. The buildings form an L-shape and are three storeys high, with a central three-bay section projecting forward. Four shopfronts from the 20th century occupy the ground floor. A central passageway provides access through the building. Most windows are sash windows with glazing bars, though the top left-hand two bays have different window types. Rubbed brick flat arches feature over the windows on the right-hand side, and casement windows are present on the left-hand side at first-floor level. A prominent eared surround with a pediment frames the central first-floor window, above which sits a small canted oriel window. The corners are emphasised by rusticated quoins. The original elaborate modillion cornice has been altered, with simpler paired modillions now present over the two left-hand bays. Dormers are visible on the roof: a central gabled dormer and five smaller flat-roofed dormers. A four-bay range to the rear of number 9 forms the east side of a courtyard.
